Welcome to the home page for the most recent member of the QuakerVille flock.

In April of 2005 we were alerted to the fact that a Quaker Parrot in the South Florida area needed to be re-homed. Usually the birds are in good shape when the call comes in and we facilitate a safe transfer from one home to another. We try to not get personally involved with the transfer, it seems to make the job a little easier when we don't get to close to the bird being transferred.

On a Saturday afternoon Jo and I went to pickup a 4 year old Quaker and cage expecting him to be healthy and ready to move to a new home. What we were presented with was a bird mauled by a dog a week earlier and about to die.

His name was Vinny and he was sitting on the cage floor all puffed up and stone eyed. it was apparent that he hadn't eaten for a while because there were no fresh poops on the bottom of his filthy cage and when we wrapped him in a towel for the hour trip home he didn't move or make a sound or poop all the way home. When we picked him up from the primary rescuer she said that he had been mauled by a dog six days earlier and had not been vet checked or cared for since that time. Poor little Vinny was in very bad shape and about to die.

Our trip home seemed longer than it was as we raced to get our dying rescue bird home to start treatment.
