The saddest news I've ever expected to post on QuakerVille is
the death of my Stanley. Stanley died in the early hours of January
9, 2010. Stanley was 16 years old and has been my avian
companion since I picked him up as a 3 month old bird from a pet
store in Palm Beach Gardens Florida, almost this same day 16 years
ago. He died of heart failure as a complication from an enlarged
liver. We have been treating him for an mystery illness for almost 4
years and have been holding our breath every day from that time.
Stanley was in our vet's ER at the time and was being treated for a
high blood count but we also saw the recent x-ray and knew that his
illness had become very serious just in the past week and felt his
time was short.
Stanley was buried in our QuakerVille cemetery on Saturday
Jan 30, 2010. Along with his QuakerVille aviary mates, Stanley has a
wonderful big green ceramic pot as his final home. I do plan a more through
memorial for Stanley as soon as I can return to normal form an
illness and all the sadness I've experienced this January. Stanley's
QuakerVille web sites will remain online and operational for the
foreseeable future since we still want to make sure that all Quaker
people companions can get the best information about their Quakers
as possible. Jo and I are still working with the wild flocks of
South Florida and other avian groups. We love birds, it's just a
little harder to watch them these days as the bring the sting of
memories of our avian companions who have died.
My
baby. My precious Stanley. You will be missed, you will never be
forgotten. Even though I can't hold you in my hands, cuddle you
or talk to you, I have sweet memories of you and will remember you
in pictures, videos and sounds. And I will always share what I've
learned about you and our avian family with all those who need the
information.
This is
Stanley the Quaker Parrot the inspiration of QuakerVille. Stanley is my
buddy and birdy companion for the past 16 years. At times he has been a
wonderful builder. All the time he is a little cuttie with a heart of
gold. i can't imagine life without my Stanley, he continues to amaze me
with his charm and love. he loves to cuddle with me and be with me
whenever he can.
This is one of my recent favorite poses of Stanley. Check out Tashy bird
peeking between the bars.
Stanley likes to make this Quaker OWL look, especially when I'm on the
floor taking pictures up at him. Sometimes I take so many pictures he
anticipates the flash and blinks his eyes so the bright flash won't
hurt. This little OWL face is so cute, he puffs up and glares at the
camera.
QuakerVille is all about our Quaker Parrot flock and many other
special Quaker Parrot companions.
From Stanley, to Squirt both Jo and I really love our little companions.
We don't see ourselves as their owners, although legally we are, we
see ourselves as their care takers, their slaves, their companions
and we feel we've have the privilege of living with them in our home.
These critters are extremely special to us.
One of the ways we care for them is to learn about them so we can make
their captive lives as enjoyable as it would be living outside in
the wild. Some people don't like the idea of keeping wild creatures as
pets or companions but I can tell you for certain that our flock loves
living with us, they enjoy our company as much as we enjoy theirs.
It's our role in this companionship to know as much about them as
possible so Jo and I spend a lot of time watching wild Quaker Parrots in our
area as well as around the country.
I believe that if it were not for people like my wife and I and
thousands of other people keeping these wonderful creatures inside they would
be hunted to extinction and killed by ignorant and greedy people just
like the Carolina Parakeets were in the late 1800's. --
It's our job to protect them.

In 2008
tragically we lost four of our special companions. It's taken almost 2 years for Jo or I to
get to a point where we can even talk about them not being with us
without breaking into tears. Our home is very quiet these days with only
1 Quaker Parrot in our home and the silence is sometime deafening.
Many people
complain about the noise that Quaker Parrots produce but we actually
find the noises both comforting and humorous (Jo wears cotton in her
ears in the aviary). Over the years we've had our wonderful flock of 6 we
learned each noise made by each bird and realized that they all were as
unique as humans. They all have their likes and dislikes, their favorite
things and most hated things and even several threw temper tantrums and
misbehaved like kids.
Most of all we realized that all of our birds not only relied on us for
sustenance, food and water, but they relied on us for companionship. Not
only were they our pets but to a great extent I believe that we became
theirs. We found that they were as curious about us, what we do and how
we do it as we are of them.
Having these birds has certainly taught us to love unconditionally
because they loved us unconditionally. What a great way to live on this
planet. I used to sit with the flock and be totally awed that I was
sitting there holding a little feathered bird in my big hand and that
the bird wanted to be there and found my hand as a place of safety and
for comfort. Make no mistake about this, the birds loved being with us
as much as we loved being with them. We were and are their companions.
This is Scooter, he's a little
over 10 years old and he has been with us almost all of that time. Click
his picture to see more information about Scooter Bird, the lovable little
Quaker Parrot.
Scooter died January 7, 2008
Fly free my special Scootie Bootie, words can not express our loss and
how much you are still loved.
Skippy is our "blue baby". Every
year she lays several clutches of eggs giving me some real good poses
for cute pictures and video. Skippy is a talker and is very smart. She
can be territorial but on the most part she loves to cuddle and make
cute noises.
Skippy died in August of 2008
Fly free my Blue Baby. We will miss your little voice and your wonderful
spirit.
Miracle is our famous rescue
birdy. Miracle's story inspired the book "Parrots in the City" and is
such a pleasure to have in our home. He loves MAMA! Check out his You
Tube video sometime.
Our Miracle Birdy died March 2008. He should not have lived for even one
day but he lived very well with us for over 7 years and was a blessing
to have in our home. He was so special, a gift from God for sure. Parrots
in the City tells his story.
Tashy bird
was not supposed to live with us when she came to the aviary, we
purchased her for a friend because she had some yellow feathers. After
the first molt she lost her yellow and we didn't have the heart to move
her to a breeding facility where she wasn't really needed. Tashy died in December 2008
She was Stanley's special friend. We will all miss her as she flies free
in Heaven.
Most of all we realize
that all of our birds not only rely on us for sustenance, food and
water, but they rely on us for companionship.
This is Squirt, our most recent rescue birdy and the only Quaker left in
the aviary. When Squirt came to us she
was almost dead after being mauled by a dog a week earlier. Squirt has an
injured spine and she is a plucker but she is a wonderful little green
spirit and loved living with the others in the flock. She came to us
at 72 grams and almost dead, now she is consistently over 90 grams and
is a little love.
