Current Reviews of "The Quaker Handbook"

Denise Testa,
BIRD FANCIER MAGAZINE (SPRING 97 issue) writes:

"The subtitle,

"An Informative Guide to Keeping, Breeding, and Raising Quaker Parakeets,"

is an apt description for this user-friendly little book. Although it positions itself as geared towards new Quaker owners, this book should be in the library of anyone who either owns or is thinking about getting into Quaker Parakeets. The authors go into a fair amount of detail, not only describing what it can be like owning one of these little birds with the large-parrot personality, but discussing the pros and cons of purchasing an adult rather than a handfed baby. The book then proceeds to walk the reader step by step through the process of locating, selecting, and purchasing a suitable Quaker Parakeet. Included are descriptions of current criteria and restrictions throughout the United States for ownership of these birds."

"The sections on housing and nutrition offer sound advice and a variety of ideas for different situations. The authors round out the Quaker's physical well-being with a chapter that discusses various hazards avian pets may encounter and the safety precautions which can counteract them."

"Too often avian care books gloss over the mental health aspect of birds in captivity, giving it limited space and importance. Thankfully,
The Quaker Handbook is the exception, covering the topics of enrichment techniques, suitable toys, proper socialization and nurturing with detailed descriptions. Training and behavior modification are also discussed with enough background information and suggestions given for bird owners to feel comfortable giving them a try. And giving it a try is what this book is basically about. It's organizaed into easily located sections which have a natural progression of topics. The ringed binding lends itself the the "hands-on" Quaker owner who will usually keep it open, using it as a reference."

BIRD TALK MAGAZINE (FEBRUARY 97 issue) writes:

"The Quaker Parakeet Handbook" is appropriately subtitled:

" An Informative Guide To
Keeping, Breeding, and Raising Quaker Parakeets."
It's difficult to find information on Quakers, but this book seems to have it all! Topics covered include availability, state regulations, supplies needed, diet, health, safety, behavior modification, potty training, hand feeding, and more. There are also clever Quaker stories describing what these birds have to offer."

The Society Of Parrot & Breeders and Exhibitors:

"This small, spiral bound book is long overdue in avian literature as the Quaker or Monk Parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus, receives long overdue attention in a library edition."

"The opening first pages quickly establish the quaker with a positive personality and superb talking ability making it a talking rival of the larger psittacines. A brief description of the known mutations occurs early in the book sparking interest for those aviculturists who are challenged by breeding mutations or those breeders who would like to establish a complete collection."

"Chapter 2 delves into the basic ownership responsibilities of quakers and what can be expected by the new owner. The remainder of the book flows smoothly from bringing your bird home to the real life adventures of living with quakers. The section "Creating A Bond of Trust" gives six basic rules which would benefit all bird owners."

"Especially appealing is the closing chapter titled "Quaker Stories" which reflects life with pet quakers. This collection of first hand experiences of life with pet quakers adds a very pleasing finale to the book."

"This small book is indeed a "handbook" giving both the old and new quaker owner a handy reference."

Dr. Al Decoteau writes:

"Theresa Jordan has written a complete and magnificent book on the famous Quaker or Monk Parakeet. She has selected the treat among birds, the clown among parrots and the best pet bird one can get when they are handfed and closely allied to the human."

"It is pleasing to follow Mrs. Jordan's outline, so well presented and in an order the novice will follow so well."

"It was particularly pleasing to me to see the methods used in feeding; at a time when we stress new methods of feeding in aviculture it is noted that this author covers every aspect of feeding very well."

"The author's coverage of basic terminology is worthwhile to the beginner. It is extremely important for an author to remain basic and not delve into too many veterinary responsibilities. Indeed it is well handled here."

"Finally, the Quaker stories are most enjoyable."

"Once you have read this treatise on Quakers, you will indeed be ready to own a Quaker."
